Roofer wage statistics by U.S. metro area
What roofing crews earn drives most of what a new roof costs. Below are hourly wages for roofers (BLS occupation code 47-2181) in the 13 metro areas costterrain covers, straight from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (May 2025), with our estimate for a typical roof replacement in each market.
Key figures
- Across the 13 U.S. metro areas tracked by costterrain, the median hourly wage for roofers ranges from $21.87 in Houston to $30.81 in Seattle, a 41% gap (BLS OEWS, May 2025).
- The middle metro in the set pays roofers a median of $22.85 an hour.
- At the top of the local wage range (75th percentile), the gap widens: $24.37 in Houston versus $44.40 in Seattle, 82% apart.
- Entry-level (25th-percentile) roofer pay runs from $17.84 in Houston to $27.23 in Seattle.
- For a typical 25-square asphalt-shingle roof, costterrain's estimates across these metros run from about $10,400 at the low end (Kansas City) to about $19,500 at the high end (Seattle).

Wages are for employed roofers in each metropolitan statistical area, not for a single city, so a figure for Dallas also covers Fort Worth and Arlington. The 25th–75th percentile span shows how widely pay varies inside one market. Small metros can have thin samples: in Topeka, BLS counted only about 100 roofers, so treat its low end with care. Roof estimates add labor hours, contractor burden and national material prices, as described in our methodology.
